Black Gum or Tupelo, by either name this is an underutilized tree in Vermont. The lustrous dark green leaves turn a beautiful yellow, orange, to red in the fall. It prefers moist, well drained soils but will tolerate clay soils and occasional standing water as well as occasional drought. Unique branching makes this a perfect specimen tree. Strong preference for acidic soils. Flowers are favored by bees and fruit is valuable to birds (Dioecious species - need male and female plants to get fruit).
